WTA Rome 2024: Aryna Sabalenka vs Elina Svitolina Match Analysis

tennis predictions

Aryna Sabalenka will look to maintain her grip on the No.2 ranking on Monday, when she takes on Elina Svitolina for a spot in the fourth round. It will the fourth meeting between the two with Sabalenka currently leading the head-to-head 2-1. The only post-birth matchup between the pair came at Roland Garros last year, where the second seed took it 6-4 6-4.

2024 started promising for Svitolina but things have been tough for her since the back injury picked up at the Australian Open. There have been signs of a return to form this week though, with two comfortable wins so far. “I really like to play here, especially night sessions, it’s really special,” Svitolina said afterwards. “So many great memories. Each time that I step on the center court here, it really brings back all the memories, all the tough matches that I’ve played here.”

Sabalenka’s chase for a second consecutive final has started well with two wins so far. The second of those came against Dayana Yastremska with the 6-4 6-2 victory being her first in four attempts against the 32nd seed. She was greatly helped by a strong serving performance which saw her save both break points faced in the match.

If there is anywhere that Svitolina can beat Sabalenka, it is likely in Rome. A two-time winner, the Ukrainian’s best tennis on clay has come in the Italian capital. The issues with the matchup are still there for her though, with the match largely being on Sabalenka’s racquet. Svitolina’s best tennis since returning had been coming with her offering a bit more aggression and that will be needed here as remaining a passive is not an option for her, even on clay where her superior movement can help.
