Elina Svitolina vs Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova US Open 2023 Prediction and Analysis

tennis predictions

Elina Svitolina looks to continue her strong comeback year on Thursday, with Anastasia Pavyluchenkova representing a very winnable match for the Ukrainian despite the 2-3 head-to-head. It is the next of many Svitolina-Russia clashes since the war began, with Svitolina always looking far more motivated.

Svitolina was superb in her opening match, albeit against a weak opponent in Anna Lena Friedsam. She hit 22 winners to just 4 unforced errors in the 6-3 6-1 win against the German, taking less than an hour to advance. She is no longer just the returning mother but legitimately capable of playing as a high level seed now, with two good slam performances already this year. “Any win on the Grand Slam is a happy, happy day because the best players are here, everyone is there trying to beat you, trying to bring their best game,” Svitolina said afterwards. “That’s why there’s so many exciting matches on the Grand Slam.”

Pavlyuchenkova is back in the top 100 now, ensuring that there would be no drama like at Wimbledon where the French Open quarter finalist did not receive a wildcard despite being the standout player without direct entry at SW19. She had played just two tournaments since Paris with a one-sided Cincinnati loss to Danielle Collins not giving much hope for New York. She did win easily against qualifier Fiona Crawley, who was playing in her first match as the NCAA No.1.

This pair are definitely still at different stages of their comebacks with Svitolina showing she already has the higher peak level as was the case prior to their absences. Upping her game for the slams may well be the plan for the former No. 3 from now on, with parental and ambassadorial duties both taking up a fair amount of time. There may be question marks over her ability still to deal with power players later on but Pavlyuchenkova is unlikely to remain consistent enough against someone solid enough to absorb the pace and draw errors.
