Novak Djokovic vs Gael Monfils Cincinnati 2023 Preview and Prediction

tennis predictions

Gael Monfils may be hoping it is nineteenth time lucky for him against Novak Djokovic when he takes on the World No.2 in Cincinnati on Thursday evening. Dating back to 2005, he has never beaten the Serbian at main tour level with very few matches even being close for the most part.

Djokovic had a nice workout on Wednesday, taking the first set against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina before the Spaniard retired. Keeping on serve until 4-3 when there was a medical timeout was enough for Djokovic, who took advantage after as they traded breaks until the end of the set for 6-4. “It’s never the way you like to win, I think for the crowd as well. Coming in, they expect to see a battle, they expect to see a match. Of course it’s great for me to be able to come back to the court and win a match. Obviously mixed emotions with the way it finished. Nevertheless, I’m hoping that I can build my form day to day and progress through the tournament with raising the level.”

Monfils does appear to be having a bit of a revival in North America at the moment. He has now won at least two matches in three straight tournaments, with some nice wins along the way. He eased past Alex de Minaur in straight sets, not allowing the Australian to break serve once in the 7-5 6-4 victory.

Djokovic will move Monfils around the court with ease and will show why he has dominated this matchup in the past. While it could be entertaining at times, it is unlikely to be too competitive especially with Djokovic being one of the worst players to play as an injury doubt – which Monfils so often is.
