Novak Djokovic will close out the Centre Court schedule on Day 5, taking on Stanislas Wawrinka for a spot in the last 16. With the defending champion being guaranteed a show court on every occasion, he has not suffered from the rain delays unlike many of those competing on Friday. Across the six matches for CC and C1, just this and one other are third round clashes. It will be the 29th meeting between the two although expectations of a repeat of the early-mid 2010s thrillers are low.

Wawrinka will likely be pleased already with his third round run here, having never really been much of a contender on grass even at his peak. He secured his spot with a four set victory over Tomas Etcheverry, making the most of a draw against an inexperienced grass player. It is his first third round in a slam in seven attempts and his first at Wimbledon since 2015.

Djokovic just keeps on rolling on the grass, most recently rolling Jordan Thompson in straight sets. He delivered on the key moments despite the Aussie’s 21 aces, taking the match 6-3 7-6 7-5. “Every time I walk out on the court, particularly in Grand Slams and centre courts, I feel tremendous pressure and expectations from myself, from people around that are watching live or on TV, the whole tennis world,” Djokovic said after securing his 350th career slam win. “It’s a feeling that I’m used to by now, and it’s something that I also embrace because it’s giving me further motivation to strive to make more history.

Djokovic should ease through this one against an opponent on his weakest surface, who has failed to hit the heights of his pre-injury career. With a full year in the books, he is still outside the Top 80 and has struggled against the top players. Wawrinka won’t lose this one out of failing to rise to the occasion but because he is unable to consistently dictate with his backhand like he did during his prime.
