Alize Cornet vs Elena Rybakina Wimbledon 2023 Preview and Analysis

tennis predictions

Alize Cornet will look to provide one of the biggest shocks of the tournament for the second Wimbledon running on Thursday, when she takes on defending champion Elena Rybakina for a spot in round three. The Frenchwoman broke Iga Swiatek’s epic winning streak last year, allowing the draw to break open for Rybakina who took advantage to win her first slam.

It has not been the best of years for Cornet, who is still only 12-16 in 2023 despite showing some improvement during the grass swing. The Nottingham semi-finalist won her opener in routine style, beating the qualifier Nao Hibino 6-2 6-2. She was deadly efficient on break points, going 5/5 in the match.

The early nerves should be gone for Rybakina now but she will need to improve from her opening round win over Shelby Rogers. The Kazakh more consistent hitting eventually won out in the 4-6 6-1 6-2 win, with 12 aces helping her on the way to victory. “Of course, on grass everything changes quickly. With a break down, it’s not easy. Shelby, she played really well also first set. She didn’t have so many mistakes. I’m not so happy that it took me the whole set, I would say. In the end I just tried to focus on every point, firstly on my serve, then just to try to get the returns.” she said on what happened between sets one and two.

Rybakina does have one of the more suited grass games on the tour, with a big serve and forehand helping her out a great deal. Cornet will try and employ some trickery and touch to help her out in this one but the Frenchwoman at her current level is unlikely to be able to live with the defending champion’s power.
