Mayar Sherif vs Aryna Sabalenka Madrid 2023 Preview and Prediction

tennis predictions

With Madrid now at the quarter finals stage, the projected final between Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek is still on. Sabalenka still looks highly likely to advance to this stage with what looks a kind draw on paper. She will play Mayar Sherif in the quarter finals with Maria Sakkari or Irina Begu standing between her and another final.

Sabalenka moved to 26-4 on the year after seeing off the threat of rising talent Mirra Andreeva. She fell down an early break for 1-2 but took control immediately after the rebreak, dropping just two further games in the 6-3 6-1 victory over the 16 year-old. She took advantage on serve throughout, winning more than half of her points at return.

Sherif’s spot in the quarter finals is well deserved with three seeds defeated to get to this stage. After straight sets wins over Anhelina Kalinina and Caroline Garcia, she beat Elise Mertens in three sets to build on her best WTA 1000 run to date. She had not made it past the second round in any event at this level previously and had won only one match in total. The Egyptian is set for a career high ranking after this tournament but needs one more win to break into the top 40.

Sherif has done well to get to this stage but there is little she can do to damage Sabalenka on a regular basis in this one. The World No.2 is still playing very well and even a strong defensive performance from her opponent is unlikely to disturb her for too long.

Prediction – Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets
