World No.1 Iga Swiatek finally makes her return to the court after a month out, facing Qinwen Zheng in Stuttgart. The Pole is the defending champion here with this title one of the many she picked up during her lengthy winning streak last spring.

Swiatek was unable to defend her Miami title after picking up an injury at Indian Wells but feels happy enough that her rib problems have passed now. “I’m not injured anymore, so that’s the most important thing for me,” Swiatek said earlier in the week. “I feel like I used that time in Warsaw well to rest a little bit and to not think about tennis. I have still been working out physically a little bit and obviously coming back to practicing step by step. Here I am, and I think I’m ready.”

Zheng was a fairly strong performer at ITF level on clay during her sharp rise up the rankings but is largely inexperienced at WTA level despite a surprise fourth round run at the French Open last year, one that was ironically ended by Swiatek in three sets. She beat lucky loser Alycia Parks in straight sets last round, saving the one break point she faced during the 6-4 6-4 win against the American.

If Swiatek comes into this one rusty, there is potential for trouble here with Zheng at her attacking best able to trouble the top players regularly. However, it does remain the issue for the Chinese keeping it up against the more capable defensive players and those who can drag matches out. Swiatek remains an incredible frontrunner though and if she starts well, it seems unlikely she will be facing any trouble in this one.

Prediction – Iga Swiatek in straight sets
