Alcaraz bounced back well from his shock Miami loss to Jannik Sinner, easing past Nuno Borges in his first match here. He went 5/7 on break points in the 6-3 6-1 win, looking impressive for large parts and thankfully showing no ill effects from the issues that kept him from competing in Monte Carlo. “I feel great. Playing here in Barcelona, [my] first match on clay since Rio [in February],” said Alcaraz. “I feel great. Moving well, hitting the ball really well so I feel a lot of confidence playing here in Barcelona. It’s a really special place for me.”

The moment for taking back the No.1 spot may be gone for Alcaraz for a while now but he will be eager to put himself in a good position and further establish himself as the one to beat at the French Open, where he should be a top 2 favourite for the event at worst. Against a struggling opponent, he is unlikely to have much trouble against an opponent who may not be able to handle such a physical clash at this stage.
