There will be a Russian in the final of the Miami Open with Daniil Medvedev and Karen Khachanov facing off for a spot there on Friday afternoon. Medvedev does lead the head to head 3-1 although one of those wins was at the Next Gen Finals with their four game set format. He also picked up the win this year in Adelaide, winning 6-3 6-3 despite a bad serving day.

Medvedev, now 27-3 for the year, ended the shock run of Christopher Eubanks in the quarter finals although the World No. 119 did hold his own for large parts of the match. He eventually got to grips with the American’s big serve, earning a rain delayed 6-3 7-5 victory. “I didn’t play my best before. The rain helped me go out and have more energy,” Medvedev said on the delay. “It helped me and I only played better and better, apart from one bad game on my serve, but it happens.”

Khachanov also found it easy against his quarter final opponent, controlling the match against Francisco Cerundolo once he has recovered from an early break deficit. He was much more solid in the windy conditions, breaking four times in the 6-3 6-2 win. “At the end of the day it was a question of finding rhythm,” Khachanov said. “At the beginning, it was pretty windy and I couldn’t figure out where the wind was coming through. I then started to hit through the ball more and then I felt better and better. After I broke him back I felt I am on a good rise and felt that I could not miss. That is a good feeling to have during a match.”

Khachanov has been fairly consistent over the past three months but his struggles against the very top players has been well documented. Before beating Stefanos Tsitsipas earlier in the tournament, he was on a 23 match losing streak against top 10 players. To have any chance against Medvedev in this one, he will need to be at his aggressive best but in the fourth seed’s current form he will be near impossible to break down continually over a set or three. Carlos Alcaraz is anticipated to be waiting in the final for the winner and Medvedev will be desperate for a crack at revenge on slightly more favourable conditions.
