Daniil Medvedev seeks to continue his great run of form on Thursday afternoon, taking on qualifier Christopher Eubanks for a spot in the semi finals. Eubanks is just one of three men to make it this far as a qualifier in twenty years with the others being current top 10 player Felix Auger-Aliassime and previous top 10 player Guillermo Canas. Unsurprisingly it will be the first meeting between these two with Eubanks spending much of his time on the Challenger circuit when the tour is not in the USA.
Eubanks was a handy college player but never hit the heights like Ben Shelton and Marcos Giron did, to name a few. At 6ft7in, he plays as you would expect with a big serve and forehand combo. It has helped against an admittedly weak draw but it has still been impressive to see him make it this far. The latest win came over Adrian Mannarino with the American serving well on his way to a 7-6 7-6 victory.
Medvedev found it easy against Quentin Halys, never dropping serve against the Frenchman in a 6-4 6-2 win. It was a match that had a long delay before finishing so he was definitely happy to finish things off before another potential delay. “I’m pretty happy that I managed to play not so bad, becauset was not easy. I think that’s why Quentin was also missing a lot, because when you play at midnight… You usually sleep at midnight. So trying to play some tennis then [was tough].” he said.
Eubanks is ultimately going to be too limited against an elite opponent, especially one that knows how to nullify a big serving player like himself. Medvedev will just need to make the qualifier move and take part in longer rallies to make this one very little of a contest. The fourth seed will be favoured to make the final should he win this one with either Francisco Cerundolo or Karen Khachanov likely to trouble him in this mood.
