The Carlos Alcaraz show continues on Tuesday evening with Tommy Paul the latest man to have a crack at the Spanish superstar. Paul does actually hold a 1-0 lead in this matchup, having taken their only meeting at the Canada Masters just weeks before Alcaraz went on to become the new US Open champion and take the No. 1 ranking.

Alcaraz moved on to 16-1 for the year with another straight sets win in round three. He has won both of his opening sets here 6-0 but the second against Dusan Lajovic required a bit more effort after he failed to serve out at the first time of asking in the 6-0 7-6 victory. “I feel fast on court, I am moving well,” said Alcaraz, who hit 27 errors in the win. “I am happy with the variety I am playing [with]. Lots of shots. I am enjoying every single second out there.”

Taylor Fritz, Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff will rightly be grabbing more attention as Top 10 Americans but Paul is also performing well, with the Australian Open semi final the highlight for him. He is inside the top 20 thanks to that and has plenty of room to move up if he has even an average clay season. His latest came against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina with 8 aces helping him on his way to a 6-3 7-5 win over the Spaniard.

While both players have improved since that August meeting last year, Alcaraz’s rise has been staggering and you’d expect he will level up this matchup with victory here. The World No.1 is likely to be more savvy to the net approaches of Paul and has improved his serve since then, something else that was targeted throughout that Canada loss. Paul is the more powerful player here but Alcaraz is able to more than hold his own and will seek to nullify that as much as possible, moving the American about and working the drop shot in from time to time.
