Stefanos Tsitsipas will finally play his first match in Miami on Monday morning, facing qualifier Cristian Garin for a spot in the fourth round. Garin won the first match between the two at Challenger level but their two meetings on the main tour were both won by the Greek on clay courts.
Garin will be well prepared for this one with four matches already won at this tournament. He won two in qualifying before following that up with wins against Marcos Giron and Sebastian Baez. Even if he loses here, it will have been a productive month at the Sunshine Double tournaments having also made the last 16 at Indian Wells.
While having two extra days rest, Tsitsipas may be disappointed he also didn’t get the opportunity to test his troublesome shoulder in a match context due to Richard Gasquet’s second round withdrawal. The focus this week is likely to be more on gaining match sharpness and protecting the shoulder but if he is fine then a deeper run is more than possible.
Miami is playing a bit differently and faster so the Tsitsipas serve should help a lot if the Greek is more or less recovered. He was playing some of his best tennis at the start of the year and getting close to that would go some way to making this a fairly comfortable one for the second seed. Being strong on both flanks, he will be able to expose Garin who will have a lot less time on his shots here.
