12th seed Frances Tiafoe looks to continue building on a strong start to 2023 with Lorenzo Sonego the latest opponent for the home favourite. It will be the third meeting between the two with the pair splitting matches at the end of last season. With injury questions over Stefanos Tsitsipas and Felix Auger-Aliassime often vulnerable, Tiafoe may see this as a good opportunity for another deep run.
After cruising against a struggling Dominic Thiem in his first match, things were a bit more difficult for Sonego against Daniel Evans. He had to come from a set down to beat the Brit 4-6 6-3 6-2, delivering at key moments in some part down to his big serving. He saved 12/13 break points in the win and while he hit 6 aces too, the accompanying 7 double faults will be a concern if they continue against better opponents.

Tiafoe should have a legitimate chance to break into the Top 10 at some point this year, especially with few points separating those from around No.9 to No. 15. A 6-7 7-6 6-4 win against qualifier Yosuke Watanuki does not look too impressive on the face of it but making it through against an opponent who hit 55 winners does deserve a bit of credit. “He was playing lights out and I was on the back foot a lot. He played a helluva match tonight, so give respect where respect is due. He was so red hot but I was hoping his level might drop in glimpses and I did a good job of taking advantage when it did.” he said after.
Tiafoe was able to escape in the last round due to the inevitable drop in level from a player outside the Top 100. It will be tough again here with Sonego likely to offer the same barrage on the forehand side but with less likelihood of a drop-off. Tiafoe is more comfortable in the pressure moments though and with the help of a vocal home crowd, should see his way through even if it requires some drama beforehand.
