Carlos Alcaraz will look to continue his amazing start to 2023 on Sunday evening with Dusan Lajovic the next on court to face the current ATP No.1. That status continues to hang on a thread with a title defence required to maintain but it would come as no surprise should the tournament favourite do so. It will be their third meeting of the year with Alcaraz having already won two matches on clay, where Lajovic is still more comfortable.
Lajovic will have been delighted with his two wins so far, following up his win against a poor Andy Murray by nullifying the threat of big serving Maxime Cressy in round two. He was broken just once in the 6-4 7-6 win, making the third round in Miami for the fourth time in his career.
Alcaraz won the first eight games in his 6-0 6-2 win against Facundo Bagnis, showing no signs of fatigue after his Indian Wells title run. While Bagnis was never going to be much of a threat, this was still an impressive performance overall. “I knew that I needed to be focused for my first match,” said Alcaraz after his win. “To start a new tournament is never easy, [and in] different conditions. I have to be ready to get used to these new conditions, but I was really focused on the match from the beginning, and I’m happy with the way that I played. I try to improve every day.”

Lajovic is likely to be a stepup from Bagnis but it would not be a major surprise to see this one having a similarly lopsided scoreline. Alcaraz is looking unstoppable at the moment and clay specialists are not going to offer much of a threat to a man that looks comfortable on any surface while being comfortable enough to grind out matches but also knows when to step up the aggression.
