Saturday sees the continuation of the second round of the Men’s draw in Miami with Stefanos Tsitsipas one of the headline names playing on Stadium Court. The Greek looks to take back the win in the head to head against Richard Gasquet, having gone 1-1 so far after two matches back in 2018.
Gasquet made his way back to the Top 50 at the start of the year, having fallen out late in 2021. The Frenchman has struggled to find form for large parts of his later years with even a drop down to Challenger level not producing the success that he may expect as a former Top 10 player. He needed three sets to make it to this round, eventually defeating Christopher O’Connell 6-4 3-6 6-1.
Australian Open finalist Tsitsipas has not had the best time since Melbourne, trying to recover from a shoulder injury. Losses to Jannik Sinner and more recently Jordan Thompson show that recovery process has not been without troubles but the suggestion is that the extra fortnight has helped a lot with his readiness for this tournament. “[I hope] to play pain-free and just be able to step out there and show something different than Indian Wells because Indian Wells was a big struggle… I hope I get to play with more of an element of fun on the court and not think too much about my arm.” he said.
Tsitsipas will be the heavy favourite as long as he has recovered sufficiently with Gasquet unable to outhit or outrally his opponent if the Greek is close to 100%. It should provide a good work out for the second seed who will want to get his season back on track after the initial promising start. Carlos Alcaraz is the obvious favourite for the title here but there will be a number who may fancy they can be his opponent in the final, including Tsitsipas.
