Daniil Medvedev no longer has a lengthy winning streak to continue but the Russian will want to continue his impressive 2023 in Miami with Roberto Carballes being his first opponent of the tournament. The Indian Wells champion looks to be approaching his best after a 2022 that promised so much but felt disappointing in the end.
Medvedev’s streak ended at 19 after he was overwhelmed in the Indian Wells final by Carlos Alcaraz. He barely got a sniff during the 6-3 6-2 loss as the now new No.1 dominated from start to finish, exposing the Russian’s deep court position and distaste of the slower hard courts. It was a great week for him though especially having picked up an ankle knock that looked concerning earlier in the tournament. “I’ll only have to wait for a match on faster hard courts to see if my court positioning will work when the ball is flying faster through the air and the opponent won’t have as much time to play serve and volley and play from the baseline,” he said in terms of strategy.
Carballes Baena is another of the Spaniards who will rarely play on hard courts and usually struggle when doing so. His two completed losses on the surface this year come as no surprise with Taro Daniel (61 75) and Emil Ruusuvuori (63 60) completing easy victories. A fortunate draw saw him advance with Bernabe Zapata Miralles retiring at 6-0 3-0 down in the opening round.
Medvedev won the only meeting between these two easily, taking their 2021 Australian Open match 6-2 7-5 6-1. It’s hard to see a route to success for his opponent, who won’t have the power or consistency to trouble the Russian in the rallies. While he returned to the top five after last week, there doesn’t look much room for going any further just yet with even if a title unlikely to unseat current No.4 Casper Ruud.
