While he is currently holding both titles of the “Sunshine Double”, Carlos Alcaraz will now look to the more traditional standard of that by winning both in the same year. The Indian Wells champion begins his Miami defence against Facundo Bagnis, in what should be a fairly routine opener against a player who rarely wins outside of clay courts.
Bagnis chose to play in the South American up until this tournament, even taking part in a Challenger in Chile during Indian Wells fortnight. The Argentinian is solid enough on clay but wins at main draw level on hard have been hard to come by, often coming against other clay specialists. He beat qualifier Felipe Alves in the previous round but still needed three sets to do so.
Alcaraz was stunning in his taking of the title in Indian Wells. The Spaniard is one of a few that truly look at home on the slower hard courts and he showed that with his final performance against Daniil Medvedev. In control from the beginning, he never let up and denied the Russian the opportunity to get back in at any point. He is currently back as World No.1 but must defend his title to maintain that with Novak Djokovic ready to move back up by default otherwise.
This should be a fairly routine one against a much inferior opponent on their weaker surface. It is a nice way to ease back into things having played a lot of matches recently although the Spaniard is not feeling any signs of physical or mental fatigue right now. “I don’t feel the pressure too much. I know the things I have to do. I need to play relaxed and not mind if I lose or if I play well or not… That is why I am playing at a good level. I am enjoying every single second and playing relaxed. That is what I am thinking about on court.” he said pre-tournament.
