An improving Alexander Zverev will look to continue his improvement in Miami with the 2018 finalist playing Taro Daniel for a spot in round three. Zverev is not yet at risk of falling out of the Top 20 but the German will likely need to get back into his groove sooner rather than later with plenty of clay points to defend over the next few months.
Zverev will be kicking himself having lost to eventual finalist Daniil Medvedev at Indian Wells. He took the first set of the 7-6 6-7 5-7 loss and had numerous opportunities in the second to have a break lead before finally getting bested in a dramatic match that also saw the Russian turn his ankle. Zverev had been getting better results in recent times with a Dubai semi final one of his best since returning from injury.
Daniel is something of a curious wildcard with Miami choices often saved for younger rising talents rather than a 30 year-old like him. He does come into the tournament with a few nice wins under his belt though, having beaten Casper Ruud in Acapulco and Matteo Berrettini at Indian Wells. He has been in and out of the top 100 in recent times, with the two wins last fortnight letting him squeeze back in at No. 97.
This should be the kind of match that Zverev should be expecting to get through fairly comfortably in his return to the top. Daniel will be well rested after having a win by retirement in his opener but that is likely to have any impact on the match this early in the tournament. The German should thrive in these conditions though and go on to secure his spot in round three.
