Carlos Alcaraz is once again the World No.1 after defeating Daniil Medvedev in the Indian Wells final, 6-3 6-2. He was always in control of this one, stopping the Russian’s winning streak at 19.

It had been an impressive fortnight for Medvedev, who had fought his way to the final despite picking up a number of knocks as well as visibly struggling with the unpleasant conditions in the desert. He was immediately on the backfoot here, getting broken in his opening service game thanks to an excellent cross court backhand from Alcaraz on break point. The new No.1 played a very clean match and knew when to pick his spots, hitting 18 winners during the match.

The second set was more of the same with Alcaraz once again breaking in his first return game with a double fault on break point summing up his opponent’s day. He went 3/3 on break points but also put in great work on serve, stopping Medvedev from getting even one break point of his own.

“It means a lot to me. To recover the No. 1 [ranking] is crazy for me,” Alcaraz said after the win. “But especially to lift the trophy here for me means a lot… I love this tournament. I really enjoy my time here and of course I felt the love from the people from day one. For me, it’s amazing to complete these 10 days like this.”

Alcaraz becomes the youngest player to win both parts of the Sunshine Double of Indian Wells and Miami as well as being only the second man to win 3+ Masters 1000 titles as a teenager, following in Rafael Nadal’s footsteps. Anything less than a defence of his title will ensure this trip to No. 1 will be a brief one with Djokovic retaking it should Alcaraz lose a match in the next fortnight.
