With three straight titles and a fourteen match winning streak, Daniil Medvedev probably is the one to beat at Indian Wells this fortnight. The Russian is best placed to make a return to the Top 5 after this tournament and will further want to stake his claim as a potential slam winner this year, especially at the US Open later in the year. He opens at Indian Wells against Brandon Nakashima, facing the American late on Friday.

Nakashima had show a lot of promise last season but had been failing to build on that in the early stages of this year. His impressive straight sets win over John Isner was just his second of the year, denying the his big-serving compatriot a single break point chance during the 7-6 6-3 win.
Medvedev lost five straight finals following his US Open title in 2021, most notably doing so in Melbourne the following year. He broke that streak in Los Cabos in August and now has five straight wins, the most recent of them coming in Dubai. He ended Novak Djokovic’s unbeaten start to the season before comfortably beating Andrey Rublev in straight sets in the final. “It is amazing because at the start of the year, it was not perfect. In tennis when you don’t win matches you have doubts. Now it just feels better,” Medvedev said. “I was really happy with these three weeks and I am looking forward to the next ones.”
This should still be a comfortable win for Medvedev, who is now looking very much back to his best. However, there may be some concerns with the Russian having struggled in the desert before. He has just a 6-5 record at the tournament and has never made it past the last sixteen, even though he was top seeded at two of them. Nakashima is going to find it much tougher in this one, and won’t be able to cruise through service games with one of the tour’s better returners facing him instead of Isner on this occasion.
