Novak Djokovic will look to improve his record against Hubert Hurkacz to 5-0 when he takes on the Pole in the quarter finals of the Dubai Tennis Championships on Thursday. The World No.1 is still unbeaten on the year although both this match and a likely semi with Daniil Medvedev will strongly test that over the next few days.

Hurkacz has been a consistent fixture in the top 15 since initially breaking into it during the 2021 season, largely helped by his Miami title. A big serve and power off both wings continue to make him a threat against anyone on the tour, with them being used to good effect in his run to the Marseille title last week. He is in the quarter finals after a comfortable win against Pavel Kotov, a win that would be welcomed after struggling through a third set tiebreak in his opener.

Djokovic was massively improved in his second round match, breaking four times to defeat Tallon Griekspoor 6-2 6-3. Only a sloppy ending to the match, where he failed to close out initially from 5-1 made the scoreline look a bit less one-sided. “[My level was] much closer to the best level tonight than it was yesterday,” said Djokovic. “I probably didn’t expect to play that well tonight, considering last night’s match. But here we go, every day is a new day, a new opportunity, and I’m really glad that I played this well tonight.

Hurkacz’s chances of taking out Djokovic likely would have been much higher a couple of days ago with a less sharp opponent on court. With two more matches under his belt, the top seed should be able to work his way through this one but a lights out serving match from the Pole could make things interesting. Hurkacz will still have a tough time on return regardless so any win would likely require the lottery of a tiebreak for success.
