Joining Novak Djokovic in hoping to maintain a double-digit winning streak, Daniil Medvedev plays Alexander Bublik in the second round at the Dubai Tennis Championships. It’s a matchup that has served the Russian well in the past with him winning all five of their meetings so far, most recently doing so at the 2021 Canada Masters.
Bublik does have one of the better serves on tour and is capable of putting up big ace numbers when it is firing. He hit 53 across four matches in his run to the Marseille semi finals last week, where he was eventually defeated by Hubert Hurkacz. He was cruising in his opener here, leading 6-1 1-0 against Alexander Lazarov before the Bulgarian was forced to retire.
Medvedev is now ten matches unbeaten following his win over Matteo Arnaldi in round one. The Russian had far too much athleticism to be caught out by the Italian and was always in control during the 6-4 6-2 win, never facing a break point in the match. A return to the top 5 this week is possible although unlikely given it depends on an early Taylor Fritz exit in Acapulco.

Bublik had lost ten straight matches (including Davis Cup and United Cup) dating back to last year before his Marseille run and his style does lend itself to such streaks, especially with the Kazakh a fairly volatile player in general. A calm and composed Medvedev should not be troubled too much in this one, especially against an opponent that has struggled so badly against him in the past.
