Novak Djokovic Hopeful of Playing Indian Wells and Miami Despite Vaccination Rules

Novak Djokovic is still hoping to play Indian Wells and Miami despite the current US travel rules still being in place for unvaccinated travellers from abroad. He spoke at a press conference about the events following a training session in Belgrade.

The US continues to be an outlier with most countries relaxing all coronavirus-related restrictions on travel. That includes Australia, where the World No.1 made his glorious return to take his tenth Australian Open after being controversial denied access to the country and event in 2022. He stated he has applied for a special permit to enter the country due to his unvaccinated status.

“Everything is currently in the process,” Djokovic said. “I have a big desire to be there. “I am really thankful to the Indian Wells and Miami tournament [officials] and community for their support publicly and they would like me to be able to play in their tournaments.”

Djokovic returned to the top spot after winning the Australian Open and access to the US for Indian Wells and Miami would go a long way in helping extend his lead in the ATP Tour rankings. While he has won neither since 2016, he has a combined 11 titles across the two events – 6 in Miami and 5 in Indian Wells.

He is currently slated to play Dubai next week although it will depend on the hamstring injury he has been nursing following the Australian Open.
