Tennis will have a nominee in both the Sportsman of the Year and Sportswoman of the Year categories at the prestigious Laureus World Sports Awards. Rafael Nadal is nominated for Sportsman while Iga Swiatek is one of six recognised in the Sportswoman category. Tennis has traditionally done well at the awards with Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams and Nadal all being multiple time winners.
Nadal is recognised for his two slam year, extending his grand slam haul to 22 after winning both the Australian Open and French Open. This one looks all wrapped up though with World Cup winner Lionel Messi the pick of the candidates here. Kylian Mbappe (football), Stephen Curry (basketball), Armand Duplantis (pole vault; athletics) and Max Verstappen (formula one) are also nominated.
Swiatek’s 2022 saw her win two slams and crack the 10,000 points barrier in the WTA Tour rankings. Her historic 37-match winning streak was the longest this century and lasted almost five months – spanning from Dubai to Wimbledon. Others nominated in the women’s category are Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone (athletics), Mikaela Shiffrin (alpine skiing), Alexis Putellas (football) and swimmer Katie Ledecky.
A possible nominee for the main award next year if he builds on 2022, Carlos Alcaraz is recognised in the Breakthrough of the Year award alongside Elena Rybakina while 17-time wheelchair slam champion Diede de Groot is recognised in the Sportsperson with a Disability category.
