With Daniil Medvedev and Rafael Nadal both out before he could face them, Stefanos Tsitsipas has to be considered the favourite to make the final from this half of the draw. The third seed will be hoping for a repeat of last year’s match with Jannik Sinner, where he was an easy winner in straight sets at the quarter final stage.

Sinner may count himself lucky to still be in the tournament after going two sets down to Marton Fucsovics in the previous round. That said, it was all one way after an early break in the third set of his 4-6 4-6 6-1 6-2 6-0 win. The Italian spent all of 2022 in between the No.10 and No.15 ranks, helped in large part by three quarter finals at the slams. He lost to the eventual champion at the last two while injury saw him depart early in Paris.

While his first three matches were against weak opponents, it has been a nice first week for Tsitsipas who has avoided the early round issues that have plagued him in the past. He faced just one break point against Tallon Griekspoor last time out, controlling the match from the start in the 6-2 7-6 6-3 win. “I was good mixing it up today, mixing up my slice, opening the court,” Tsitsipas said after. “I think my placement on serve was exceptional today. I didn’t have a lot of rallies on my serve, which helped a lot today to keep things clean.”

Tsitsipas has always looked good in this matchup, going 4-1 in the head-to-head. The Greek looks at home in Australia and is playing solidly enough to advance again here, even if Sinner will be a step-up from his opponents so far this week. He is still far more suited to a physical match than the young Italian and will be more reliable on serve throughout.
