With the bottom half of the draw further collapsing on Wednesday, Aryna Sabalenka‘s chances of a run to the final continue to grow. The Belarussian plays Elise Mertens for a spot in round four where the winner will play either Camila Giorgi or Belinda Bencic. This is a matchup that has served Sabalenka well with a 5-0 record since she became the higher ranked player and 6-2 overall.
Sabalenka’s improvements on serve looking to be helping a lot with the fifth seed going without a double fault during her 6-3 6-1 win over Shelby Rogers, no mean feat for the runaway leader in this category in 2022. She is possibly the most impressive player so far this year with another 32 winners in her latest match to extend her current winning streak to six.
While Mertens has not managed to maintain the consistency that saw the break into the top 15 last year, the Belgian is generally dependable at slams. Last year’s US Open was the first time she had failed to make the third round in twenty attempts, a place she has returned to after wins against Garbine Muguruza and Lauren Davis this week.
“I try to do my best, and, of course, she’s very powerful, but I try to take every opportunity as I can.” Mertens said on the matchup. Two of the biggest marks against Sabalenka’s status as a permanent slam contender may well be on the out. The early signs are excellent for her on serve and if that continues, it is hard to see Mertens being able to keep her powerful ball striking at bay long enough to take advantage.
