In one of the potential matches of the day in the men’s side of the draw, Andy Murray will face Matteo Berrettini for a spot in the second round on Tuesday afternoon. While it does have the potential to be a thriller, it will be a disappointment to lose one of these two players from the tournament after just two days. While losing the last three to the Italian, an improving Murray gave him too tough matches in Stuttgart and New York last year.
Murray has not made the fourth round of a slam since 2017 as the slew of injuries has hindered his ability to mount deep runs. It hasn’t knocked his confidence when it comes to form and fitness though, despite beginning the year with a straight sets loss to Sebastian Korda in Adelaide. “I feel well prepared. I feel ready to play a top player early in the event. Whereas last year at times, my game didn’t feel that great and getting a difficult draw didn’t feel great. I feel I am in a better place this time to deal with that.” he said.
Berrettini is one of a number of players that has made a slam final but is yet to win one, having lost at Wimbledon in 2021. The Italian’s more aggressive style does reap rewards on faster courts, as shown by his exploits on the grass. He was part of the Italian finalist team at the United Cup earlier in the month although he lost the two toughest matches at the semi and final stage against Stefanos Tsitsipas and Taylor Fritz respectively.
With little match fatigue to hinder Murray, there is a good opportunity for him to have a good go at a top 10 opponent and see if he can mount one last charge up the rankings. He will have to stay aggressive throughout and pick off the weaker backhand of his opponent but if Berrettini serves as well as he can, there will not be a lot he will be able to do for large parts of the game. This could be an almighty battle but the Italian should be able to edge it.
