It will be a battle of two recent French Open champions in the top half of the fourth round with Ashleigh Barty and Barbora Krejcikova facing off for a spot in the last eight on Tuesday. Barty will be seeking her first Wimbledon quarter final ever while for the Czech will be looking to continue her lengthy winning streak at her first Wimbledon.
Krejcikova looked below par for the first time in a while in her 7-6 3-6 7-5 win over Anastasija Sevastova. The Czech hit an uncharacteristically high 57 unforced errors in victory, something that will ensure she doesn’t last very long on Monday if she repeats it. The win saw her move to fifteen wins in a row but it does feel like the grass does not favour her as much as other surfaces do.
Barty saw off the other half of the World No.1 doubles team Katerina Siniakova in the first round, winning what could have been a tricky tie in straight sets 6-3 7-5. While there is still plenty to improve on for the Australian, she will be happy with a much improved serving performance with 8 aces and 0 double faults in comparison to 5 and 9 respectively in her second round match.
“She’s had an exceptional last couple months. I have played her plenty of times in the doubles court. Never on the singles court. It’s a new experience for both of us, some new challenges that for sure will force some of my best tennis. I’m looking forward to that challenge. I’m looking forward to trying to figure out her game, kind of piece together the puzzle that she presents.” Barty said of the Czech. It still feels like Barty has to be favoured in this one against an opponent far less accomplished on the grass. Barty had shown lots of promise on the surface in prior years and with the work put in especially in the past two years, she seems to be rightfully the favourite for the whole event at the moment.
