Dominic Thiem can match his career best run at the US Open on Monday if he secures victory against the highly rated youngster Felix Auger-Aliassime in the fourth round. The 20 year-old is one of three Canadians remaining in the draw alongside Denis Shapovalov and Vasek Pospisil. Victory could see him face off with Pospisil in the quarter finals if his fellow Canadian beats Alex De Minaur in their fourth round matchup.

Avoiding a let down after beating Andy Murray in round two, Auger-Aliassime went even better in a dominant performance against Corentin Moutet. He broke seven times against the Frenchman, dealing with a somewhat weak opponent in the way you would expect from a player who wants to establish himself as a top player. “With my physical abilities, my psychological abilities have to match it. I have to step it up and show confidence. I’m here to impose myself,” Auger-Aliassime said after the 6-1 6-0 6-4 win. “Outside the court, I think I’m a pretty kind person. But once I step on court, it’s the best man that wins. You’ve got to step it up with that killer instinct.”
Thiem ensured there would be no fairytale run again for Marin Cilic, beating the 2014 champion in four sets. It was a fairly controlled performance from the Austrian, who was in control for large parts of the 6-2 6-2 3-6 6-3 win. With Cilic surging in the fourth set, he saved two decisive break points at 2-2 and would go on to break in the next game to help put the match out of question. “I think the quick start was more because of him. He had two very tough rounds and was a little bit slow in the beginning. I took all of my chances,” Thiem said on court after the match. “Today was a good win against a great champion, so that should give me a boost. “I’m not 100 per cent yet. I still have to raise my level if I want to go deeper.”
“The whole package is great. He’s a great player, great person outside of the court. I think he has huge star potential. Unbelievable athlete, good looking. He has everything basically. The only thing to my advantage is experience. This is his first fourth round at a Slam, so hopefully I can play that out a bit. It’s going to be a nice one and I’m looking forward to it.” Thiem said on his opponent. For Auger-Aliassime, this is the kind of match that could show he is ready to move onto the next level. If he can remain controlled but aggressive, he has the opportunity to pick up a statement win against an opponent who is not quite back to the level you’d expect from a No.2 seed right now.
