17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer was just two sets away from securing his 18th major championship and eighth crown at Wimbledon. While he eventually lost to Novak Djokovic in this year’s final at the All England Club, the Swiss star is adamant that he is not satisfied with his runner-up achievement. “For me a finalist’s trophy is not the same,” Federer said. “I am still very hungry and motivated and a match like this is very helpful.” Federer lost the opening round yet managed to rebound in the second set following one of the great tiebreaks of the 21st Century. However, from there, it was all Djokovic as he raised his game to a supreme level and dominated on serve to defeat the seven-time champion 7-6(1), 6-7(10), 6-4, 6-3. “I lost against the world No. 1 at the moment,” Federer said. “That’s the kind of guy you probably can lose against. I’m not going to accept it and say it’s normal. It’s not.” “But I’ve beaten him a few times. I’m one of the few guys that’s gotten a chance. I think I was able to show that on the court.” The Swiss No. 1 moved to 40-7 this season and will take several weeks off before the start of the North American Swing ahead of the US Open. There, he is motivated to perform well and defy the odds ahead of his 34th birthday. “I’m right there. My game is good. I played on my terms. Things are all right.”
