Roger Federer may be a 17-time Grand Slam champion and potentially the greatest tennis player to ever step out onto court. However, back in 1993, he was a 12-year-old ball boy with aspirations of becoming a professional tennis player.
Back in 1993, Federer was a ball boy at his home tournament in Basel, Switzerland. That particular year, he had participated in a match where he witnessed Michael Stich defeat Stefan Edberg in the tournament final. After the tournament was completed, Federer stepped out on court to be awarded a medal for his efforts as a ball boy.
In a remarkable twist of fate just 22 years later, Federer now stands as one of the most iconic players of all time and Edberg, whom he idolized growing up, just so happens to be his coach.
How times have changed…
Now you can watch the 1993 clip where Federer was awarded the medal for his efforts as a ball boy, which Stefan Edberg watches over him, unaware of his future partnership with the GOAT.
