Maria Sharapova vs Agnieszka Radwanska Preview – WTA Finals Singapore 2014 RR

Maria Sharapova

Following losses in their second round robin matches in Singapore, Maria Sharapova and Agnieszka Radwanska will step across the court from each other for the 13th time on the professional circuit. The Russian superstar leads the series 10-2, including wins in 9 of their last 10 matches. However, based on her performances this week at the finals, this could mark one of their most competitive meetings to date. Check out the Sharapova v Radwanska Head to Head.

Following her thrilling three-set loss to Caroline Wozniacki on Tuesday, it was clear that world No. 2 Maria Sharapova was struggling on court against her second opponent Petra Kvitova. Having defeated her a mere few weeks ago in Beijing, many expected Sharapova to control the encounter, yet fatigue ultimately got the better of her and she would lose the encounter in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.

Kvitova, who appeared out of sorts against Radwanska, was the far superior player on Thursday. The contest lasted a total of 75 minutes and saw Sharapova hit 6 double faults and win 48% of her first service points.

“I think when we played the final in Beijing I found the confidence to play against her again,” Kvitova said. “Unfortunately I lost over there but I knew that I had the game to beat her and today was the time to do that.”

Earlier in the day, Caroline Wozniacki defeated Agnieszka Radwanska 7-5, 6-3 after the Polish star held a break advantage to start the opening set. The contest lasted 1 hour and 46 minutes and saw Radwanska hit 54% of her first service points and save 4 of 10 break points en route to the disappointing loss.

This marks the 13th time that these two competitors will cross paths on the WTA tour, with Sharapova leading the series with a dominant 10-2 head-to-head record. Sharapova still has a chance to qualify for the semi-final and maintain her bid for a year-end No. 1 ranking. However, she will have to defeat Radwanska in straight sets to achieve that goal – a tough task against the crafty Pole.

Prediction: Maria Sharapova in Three Sets
