Maria Sharapova vs Petra Kvitova Preview – WTA Finals Singapore 2014 RR

Sharapova v Kvitova

In a surprising turn of events, Maria Sharapova and Petra Kvitova – two former Grand Slam champions – will cross paths to determine who will remain in the prestigious year-end championships. Their most famous meeting took place in the Wimbledon final back in 2011, which marked Kvitova’s first ever Grand Slam title, and just one of two victories she has managed to date against the Russian superstar. Sharapova leads the overall head to head series 6-2.

The second seed was the first on court on Tuesday afternoon, where she played a thrilling three-set marathon match against Caroline Wozniacki. It was a remarkable contest that saw the two athletes produce impressive shot making skills, as well as a determination to run down every ball on court ala Murray vs. Djokovic. The Dane would eventually earn the victory 7-6(4), 7-6(5), 6-2 in 3 hours and 13 minutes.

The second match on court was an even more surprising affair, as Petra Kvitova was outshined by Agnieszka Radwanska, who outplayed her throughout the match en route to the straight sets victory. The contest lasted 89 minutes and saw Kvitova hit a mere 27% of her second service points and convert 1 of 4 break point opportunities.

Sharapova leads the head-to-head series against Kvitova 6-2, including wins in their last five consecutive meetings. Kvitova has not won a set against Sharapova in three years and will be hard-pressed to maintain her bid at the WTA Finals.

Prediction: Maria Sharapova in Three Sets

  1. Sharapova will likely be tired and deflated from that last match whereas Kvitova tends to shrug defeats like those as if they never happened. I think Kvitova in 2/3.
