Former Top Prospect Nicole Vaidisova Wins First Match in 4.5 Years

Nicole Vaidisova

In one of the more heartwarming moments of the week, former world No. 7 Nicole Vaidisova picked up her first professional win in over four years to kickstart her comeback trail.

Vaidisova defeated Sesil Karantantcheva 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round of the ITF Women’s Circuit event in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was a strong showing from the former Top 10 player, as she broke serve 3 times and only dropped serve once en route to the straight sets victory.

“Surreal, nerve-wracking!” she said following the match. “I am so glad I got to play.”

Considered one of the top prospects in the game back in 2004, Vaidisova won six WTA titles between 2004-2009, and managed to make several deep runs at Grand Slam events, including a semi-final runs at the 2006 French Open and the 2007 Australian Open. She also reached the quarter-finals of three other Grand Slam tournaments during that period.

Vaidisova announced that she would stop playing professional tennis in 2010 but recently confirmed she would be making a comeback this season. Her next opponent at the ColemanVision Tennis Championships is Julia Cohen.
