After winning her fifth Grand Slam title at Roland Garros this year and regaining her spot in the Top 4, former world No. 1 Maria Sharapova secured her slot in the WTA Finals in Singapore. The Russian superstar is just the second player to get confirmed in the round robin year-end tournament. Sharapova reached the semi-finals or better of seven tournaments so far this year, including two clay court titles in Madrid and Stuttgart and before culminating with her second French Open title in dramatic fashion with a victory over Simona Halep. “I am really excited to qualify for the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global and to bring the best in women’s tennis to Singapore this October,” Sharapova said of the news. Sharapova, who missed the Finals last year in Istanbul due to a right shoulder injury that sidelined her following the US Open, will be making her seventh appearance at the tournament. She won the event a decade ago in 2004 at her debut in the tournament.
