Milos Raonic Wins Washington Title in First All-Canadian Final

Milos Raonic

Milos Raonic and Vasek Pospisil engraved their names in tennis history when they emerged as the first all-Canadian final in the Open Era. It was a final that pitted the Toronto native against the Vancouver-based Pospisil with Raonic ultimately leaving with his first title in Washington.

It was the second time that Raonic and Pospisil crossed paths on the professional tour and once again Raonic was able to overwhelm his younger opponent en route to victory. While the first meeting was a tight affair that went to a third set tiebreaker, Raonic cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 victory on Sunday to deny Pospisil his first title on the ATP World Tour.

This marked Raonic’s first title win since last September, when he beat Berdych in the Bangkok final. He earned $316, 400 and 500 Emirates Rankings points.

The two competitors will now quickly make their way to the Rogers Cup in Toronto, where they are seeded in the main draw. Pospisil gets a quick rematch against his Citi Open semi-final opponent Richard Gasquet, while Raonic received a bye into the second round.

In the doubles final earlier that day, Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau defeated Leander Paes and Sam Groth 7-5, 6-4 in 80 minutes.
