Li Na Withdraws from Montreal, Cincinnati and US Open with Knee Injury

 Li Na

World No. 2 Li Na announced on Thursday afternoon that she had officially withdrawn from the entire US Open Series with a knee injury that has plagued her for a few months.

The two-time Grand Slam winner withdrew from three events over the next month, including the Rogers Cup in Montreal, the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, as well as the final Grand Slam tournament of the season, the US Open in Flushing Meadows.

Li revealed the news on her official Facebook page, where she revealed that she has “been struggling” with knee issues since March “and it is just not where I need it to be in order to play at the highest level.”

The Australian Open champion concluded by adding that her “medical team has advised me that I need to take some time off to rest my knee.” She hopes to be able to make her return to professional competition in the fall at Wuhan and Peking.

Once Li’s post went viral, the United States Tennis Association confirmed the news to The Associated Press.

Na’s withdrawal is the second notable one to hit the US Open series after Rafael Nadal withdrew from his upcoming title defences in Toronto and Cincinnati on Wednesday.

The Rogers Cup begins Monday, August 4.
