Sam Stosur to Work with Nick Kyrgios’ former coach Simon Rea

Former US Open champion Samantha Stosur has decided to alter her team and begin working with a new coach ahead of the North American hard court portion of the season.

According to The Australian, Stosur has joined forces with Wimbledon quarter-finalist Nick Kyrgios’ coach Simon Rea to help her prepare for the upcoming US Open Series, which begins Monday afternoon at the CitiOpen.

Stosur parted ways with her former coach Miles Maclagan, a Zambian-born Scotsman who used to coach British No. 1 Andy Murray, following her disappointing showing at the Wimbledon Championships last month. Stosur referred to the split as “amicable” and explained that she simply needed to “change things” and make the necessary adjustments to improve her ranking, which had dropped to world No. 19 recently.

One of the adjustments was to hire Rea, who is a former New Zealand No. 1 and ranked at No. 473 in the Emirates ATP Rankings. He was also the recipient of the 2013 award for Coaching Excellence, High Performance at the prestigious Newcombe Awards.

Rea split with Kyrgios just 11 days after the young Aussie defeated Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon. Kyrgios, who decided to begin work with Davis Cup coach Josh Eagle and Todd Larkham, took the decision to end the partnership with Rea in hopes that it would allow him more time in his home of Canberra.
