Andy Murray vs Paul Henri Mathieu Preview – ATP Queen’s Club 2014 Round 2

 Andy Murray Wimbledon

British No. 1 and now-national hero on grass, Andy Murray, is scheduled to begin his Queen’s Club title defense against France’s Paul-Henri Mathieu. It is an opponent that Murray is fairly familiar with, as they have crossed paths five times on the professional tour, all of which Murray won for a 5-0 lead in the head-to-head series.

Although Murray was thoroughly outclassed in his match-up against Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros, it was still a great achievement for the Brit, who has now reached the semi-final of both the Grand Slams he has taken part in this season. He has also now returned to the Top 5, where he sits at No. 5.

“I always enjoy coming back here,” Murray said. “It’s great preparation coming up to Wimbledon and they have a fantastic field again this year. I’ve had some great years here and some years haven’t gone so well, but last year everything worked out perfectly. It was the start of the best summer of my tennis career. I’m excited to get going.”

Murray is now in a tough position to retain both his Aegon Championships title, as well as the Wimbledon title he won last year in historic fashion. While he will begin his week against Mathieu, Murray could also face Bernard Tomic in the third round of the tournament, before coming across the likes of Tomas Berdych, Grigor Dimitrov or Stanislas Wawrinka in the later rounds.

World No. 90 Paul-Henri Matieu began his week in London with a 7-6, 6-4 win against Aljaz Bedene and will now get a huge step up in competition when he faces the top ranked Scot in the second round of the tournament.

While the head-to-head series suggests that this will likely be a fairly one-sided contest, all eyes will be on Murray’s new coach – former world No. 1 Amelie Mauresmo, who will begin working with the Brit this week at Queen’s Club.

Prediction: Andy Murray in Straight Sets
