David Ferrer believes he only has himself to blame for his loss to fellow countryman Rafael Nadal in Paris on Wednesday afternoon. The World No. 5 began the contest at a blistering pace to snatch the opening set 6-4, but he would quickly lose focus and allow Nadal a break advantage early in the second set, and from then on, the match took a turn for the worse for Ferrer. He would go on to win just one game after dropping the second set to Nadal, and succumbed to the eight-time champion 6-4, 6-1, 4-6, 1-6, 6-0. Ferrer blamed his attitude and on court behaviour for his loss, and stated after the match that he did not believe he maintained a high enough playing standard for a Top 10 competitor. “Today I was not good enough for this match,” said Ferrer. “I lost my focus. I was too slow, and I think I didn’t play the game of a Top 10 [player]. This is why I’m sad. It’s my attitude, my behaviour on the court.” “(In the second set) Rafael started playing a lot better, making fewer mistakes, and then it’s like I threw in the towel. I don’t usually do this, but I thought, I’m not going to be able to come back into the match. I thought, No, no, not against Rafa. He’s such good a player.” With the clay court season now behind him, Ferrer will look to focus his attention on a strong grass court season. Nadal will next face Andy Murray, whom he holds a 14-5 lead in the head-to-head series. The two recently met in the quarter-final stage in Rome, and battled for the better part of two hours in a thrilling three set encounter.
