Coming off her first ever WTA tour title, Canadian darling Eugenie Bouchard will be looking to shine during her fortnight stay in Paris. Her first opponent at Roland Garros will be Israel’s Shahar Peer, whom she has met on three previous occasions on the professional tour. Bouchard remains undefeated against Peer with victories dating back to 2012.
The world No. 19 rebounded from her opening match losses in Madrid and Rome with a strong showing in Nurnberg to eventually lift her first ever WTA tour title. She stormed past Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-0, 6-3 in her opening match, before she swept qualifier Anastasia Rodionova 6-0, 6-1 in 45 minutes. She would face a tougher competitor in Shvedova in the quarter-final round but would pass that test as well, as Bouchard defeated Shvedova with a pair of tiebreakers to secure her spot against Karin Knapp, whom she defeated comfortably 6-4, 6-3. She would then finish her week off with a three-set thriller against Karolina Pliskova to give herself the necessary momentum heading into the French Open.
This marks Bouchard’s second ever appearance at the Roland Garros event. She lost in the second round last year to former champion Maria Sharapova.
World No. 86 Shahar Peer is coming off a first round exit in Nurnberg to Karin Knapp, who Bouchard would later defeat in the semi-final round. Her best performances so far this season were consecutive quarter-final appearances in Katowice and Marrakech.
This will be the fourth time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Bouchard remaining undefeated at 3-0. The two first met in 2012 but also more recently in the 2014 Acapulco event, which Bouchad won handily 6-2, 6-2. This marks the first time they will meet on clay, but that is not likely to factor into the expected outcome.
