Daniela Hantuchova lost yet another Grand Slam match to one of the Williams sisters. The world No. 31 lost her third round match-up against the top seed Serena Williams 6-3, 6-3 earlier today, brining her record to 1-9 against the American. Hantuchova has only defeated each of the Williams sisters on one occasion. She has lost to Venus five separate times in Grand Slam contests but managed to beat younger sister Serena at the 2006 Australian Open – her only win over the current world No. 1.
“They kind of ruined my Grand Slam career, especially the years when I was playing really well I always had to play her or Venus,” Hantuchova told TENNIS.com. “The only time I made the [Grand Slam] semis was [at the Australian Open] in 2008 when I didn’t have to play either of them in the quarters. I think I had chances to go deeper back then, as well as I was playing. It wasn’t easy.”
Hantuchova’s biggest problem is Williams’ serve, which she considers to be “like a man’s serve” when she is in top form. It is her power that has given her a significant advantage over her opposition.
“About 80 percent,” Hantuchova said of the impact Serena’s serve. “When she’s on it’s like a man’s serve. Her power is incredible and she really serves well when she needs to.”
