Four-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova took part in a exhibition match in Colombia after being sidelined since June with a shoulder injury. The outing was a bittersweet one for the Russian No. 1 as she tasted defeat at the hands of Serbia’s Ana Ivanovic. The match was an entertaining one as former No.1 Ivanovic needed the third set tiebreak to earn the 6-1 1-6 12-10 victory over Sharapova. It was impressive considering Sharapova had not contested a match since her surprising second round exit at the Wimbledon Championships. Sharapova took to twitter after the match to express her excitement at returning to competition and said that she considers the match a “baby step forward” following the near six month layoff. After months of not competing, tonight was a baby step forward! I missed this so much!Thank you Colombia for such a warm welcome. #imback
