After making the quarter-finals in Beijing last week, David Ferrer (Player Profile) has now done enough to secure his place at the year ending ATP World Tour Finals event joining Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, although Murray’s participation is in doubt after his recent back surgery. Ferrer has made the event five times with his best performance a place in the final on his debut in 2007 when the tournament was hosted in Shanghai. His best performance since the move to London has been a semi-final in 2011. Ferrer said: “I’m very happy to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals for the fifth time. At the beginning of the year, it’s always a goal to make it to London, and if you finish in the top eight, then you know that you’ve had a good season. The O2 is an amazing venue to play at and the great fans help to bring the event alive.” 2013 has seen Ferrer reach a career high of No.3 in the ATP rankings taking advantage of the absences of Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal during the year as well as Roger Federer’s decline this year. He also made his first Grand Slam final but was beaten convincingly by Nadal in straight sets at the French Open. He began the year well taking titles in Auckland and Buenos Aires but has failed to live up to his season last year in terms of trophies. He won seven titles last year but currently only has two this time round, going 2-4 in finals. His consistency at slams has been vital to keeping his ranking with the Spaniard making at least the quarter final in each slam for the past two years. With at least four spots still up for grabs, the focus turns to Juan Martin Del Potro. The Argentinian defeated Milos Raonic in Tokyo for his third ATP 500 title of the year to move to fifth in the race and calendar rankings, one spot off his career high of No.4   The race rankings can be seen below, updated after Beijing.
