What looked like an even tie on paper before the withdrawal of Jerzy Janowicz became a fairly easy win for Australia who defeated the Poles on the indoor clay of Warsaw 4-1. Janowicz would have felt confident against both Lleyton Hewitt (Profile) and Bernard Tomic (Profile) on the clay so it is a shame for the Poles that he was unable to compete. Lukasz Kubot (Profile), who has just one win on clay this year, was thrashed by Lleyton Hewitt 6-1 6-3 6-2 and failed to convert any of his six break points in a poor performance. Michal Przysiezny (Profile) fared better but came up short on key points against Tomic. Tomic was there for the taking given his struggles on clay but never looked in trouble saving all three break points he faced. The first set saw Przysiezny broken as he served for a tiebreak while the second saw him get there only to be thrashed 7-1. An early break in the third removed any doubts as Tomic made it 2-0 with a 7-5 7-6(1) 6-4 victory. The Poles got a point back with Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski seeing off the makeshift doubles team of Nick Kyrgios and Chris Guccione in five sets 5-7 6-4 6-2 6-7 6-4 but the tie was never in doubt for the Aussies as Tomic closed it out with another straight sets victory. This time he defeated Kubot 6-4 7-6 6-3. The scheduled fifth rubber between Kyrgios and Przysiezny was cut short after Przysiezny retired 4-1 down in the first set. R1 – Lleyton Hewitt def.
