Serena Williams to meet Errani in Roland Garros semis

Top seed Serena Williams came back from the brink in her quarter final match at the Roland Garros on Tuesday afternoon. She took on Svetlana Kuznetsova, who has been playing some great tennis again after having been off the tour for a few months with an injury. In this battle between two ex French Open champions pundits were giving Kuznetsova a fighting chance, but nobody could have predicted the course of this match. Williams swept Kuznetsova aside in the first set, allowing her just one game, but the Russian raced to a 4-0 lead in the second set before the American got on the scoreboard. After a break of serve each, Williams once again broke Kuznetsova when she served for the set, to trail 2-5 and she then held her serve. Kusnetsova made no mistake on her third chance and took the set 6-3. The Russian went 2-0 up in the decider before Williams got her game back into gear and let Kuznetsova take just one more game before serving out the set at 6-3.

In a duel that had all the makings of a fine tennis match in sunny but cold and windy conditions, 4th seeded Pole Agnieszka Radwanska faced off against 5th seeded Italian Sara Errani, last year’s runner up. In the first set Radwanska broke to go up 3-2, but the Italian clay court specialist came back to lead 5-3 with a spectacular array of precise hitting into the corners and glorious drop shots. Radwanska then got another game with her special brand of shot making, but Errani served out the set at 6-4. There were a total of eight breaks of serve in the second set as both women put on a display of superlative tennis, with Errani getting to 5-4 with her serve to come. Radwanska broke to love and went 6-5 ahead, but the Italian forced a tie breaker which she won 8-6, to book a meeting with Serena in the semis.
