Novak Djokovic was too strong for Goffin in the first round of Roland Garros, Tommy Haas and Stan Wawrinka also survived their openers.
Last year’s runner up Djokovic started his French Open 2013 campaign with a straight sets victory over 22-year-old Belgian David Goffin. The serving was close to perfect in the first set which thus ended in a tie-break where Nole converted his set ball number one. The second set was decided after the top-ranked player re-took his one break lead to go 5-4 up and served the set out in the follow-up game. The set number three was tied until the top seed finally broke his challenger in the eleventh game and completed his 7-6 (5), 6-4, 7-5 victory next after spending two hours and fifteen on the court. The Serb champion is meeting Argentine Pella in round two.
Goffin’s compatriot Guillaume Rufin stood even less chances as he was dismissed by twelfth-seeded Haas after two hours of play. The rejuvenated German moved one nil ahead after edging out his opponent in the first set tie-break, while he finished him off after obtaining a double break advantage in each of the remaining sets. Haas, who lifted the Munich trophy earlier this month, progressed with 7-6 (4), 6-1, 6-3 and will take on US player Sock next.
Recent Portugal Open winner Wawrinka held all of his service games in the opening two sets in the match against 95th-ranked Thiermo De Bakker of Netherlands which allowed him to acquire a double set advantage. Whilst the Dutch reduced Wawrinka’s lead after winning the third set tie-break, the ninth seed Swiss wrapped up the clash by clinching a crucial break in the twelfth game in the set number four – he triumphed with 7-5, 6-3, 6-7 (1), 7-5.
