Robson upsets Agnieszka Radwanska to advance in Madrid

tennis predictions

10th seed Caroline Wozniacki started the run of seeds to fall in the first round of the Premier Level Matua Madrid Open on Sunday, followed later that day with the demise of 5th seed Na Li and 12th seed Roberta Vinci. In the start of second round play on Monday, Agnieszka Radwanska, seeded at 4, was surprisingly beaten in straight sets by Laura Robson, the 41st ranked British teenager. In this match games went with serve in the first set to 3-3 when Robson pulled away to take the next three games, to take the set 6-3. Completely bamboozling Radwanska with her left handed shots, she then allowed the Pole just one game in the second set 6-1, winning nine out of ten games on the trot to secure her victory in an hour and thirteen minutes.

Sam Stosur, seeded 9 in this tournament, took to the court to play 23rd ranked Spaniard, Carla Suarez Navarro, losing finalist in Lisbon last week. The first set was a very tight affair, with numerous breaks on both sides of the net. The Spaniard went ahead 3-0 in the first set before the Aussie won four games in a row to lead 4-3. Suarez Navarro broke back to level and force a breaker. Stosur had a set point, but the wily Spaniard saved it and eventually took the breaker 9-7 and the set, which last sixty six minutes. She then cruised through the second set 6-2 to book her place in the second round where she will face Kaia Kanepi.

6th seeded Angelique Kerber, who won a tough three setter in her first round match against Su-Wei Hsieh of Taiwan, spent one hour and thirty four minutes on court in her relatively easy second round defeat of 32nd ranked Frenchwoman Alize Cornet, 6-4 6-2. Cornet made it to the second round after a close two sets match against Kiki Bertens.
