Thomaz Bellucci, Juan Monaco, Nicolas Almagro and Philipp Kohlschreiber are through to the quarterfinal stage of Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell 2013.

In the top half of the draw Dmitry Tursunov, who shocked top seed David Ferrer in the second round round, was stopped by 16th-seeded Brazilian Bellucci. The Russian, who won their only previous ATP encounter, went 3-0 ahead in the opener, yet his opponent annulled the lead by 3-3. However, the Brazilian fell short when he was serving to keep the set alive and gave away another service game as well as the first set. He then took initiative in the following set in which he broke Tursunov three times to make it 1-1. Bellucci won the opening three games in the decider and was on a good way to complete his comeback. He held on to his advantage and entered the last eight in Barcelona with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory.

His quarterfinal opponent will be eighth-seeded German Philip Kohlschreiber who took out Martin Klizan of Slovakia in three sets. The result: 1-6, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5).

Seed number seven Monaco dismissed tenth seeded Frenchman Jeremy Chardy. There was a gulf in quality between the players in the opener where Chardy won no more than nine rallies and was given a bagel twenty-one minutes into the match. He regrouped for the second set where he wasted five opportunities to level the terms before the tie-break. In a dramatic thirteenth game the Argentine squandered three match balls and needed to rescue another couple of his rival’s set balls before finally wrapping up the clash. He booked his quarterfinal ticket with a 6-0, 7-6 (11) win.

Similarly, fourth seed Almagro dealt with his fifteenth-seeded countryman Marcel Granollers in straight sets. He opened the match by dropping a service game, but he bounced back quickly and made it 4-1, breaking his opponent two times in the process. Almagro’s serve remained intact later in the match, while he also broke Granollers in the ninth game of the following set to secure his spot in the last eight with a comfortable 6-3, 6-4 triumph. He will square off against Monaco next.
