USA vs Serbia 1-1 as Djokovic beats Isner in Davis Cup QFs

Novak Djokovic and Milos Raonic won on the first day of Davis Cup 2013 quarterfinals, yet neither Serbs not Canadians could move two points clear off USA and Italy, respectively.

Davis Cup 2010 winner Serbs took a one nil lead after World no. 1 Djokovic’s smooth straight sets victory over John Isner, ranked 23. Nole was the first to drop a serve in the opening set on indoor hard court at Taco Bell Arena in Boise, yet he broke back by 3-3 and prepared three set balls in the tie-break before wrapping up the opener. The Serbian player got even more convincing as the game progressed as he did not suffer any more losses of serve in the following two sets. He ultimately served them both out with a hold to love and clinched a 7-6 (5), 6-2, 7-5 victory. In the second match of the day domestic player Sam Querrey was trailing 1-2 in sets against Viktor Troicki before pulling off a comeback and celebrate a five-set triumph. Querrey seized a crucial break in the ninth game of the decider and confirmed it in style with a love hold to get the hosts back into the game. End score: 7-6 (1), 3-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

USA – Serbia 1-1

140th-ranked Vasek Pospisil came close to upsetting Italian Andreas Seppi as he acquired a two set lead at Thunderbird Sports Centre in Vancouver. The rest of the encounter, played on indoor hard court, was less enjoyable for the home crowd who witnessed Seppi’s great comeback – the 18th-ranked Italian first made it two sets each and went on to convert a decisive break point in fourth game of the last set. He held on to the advantage and won a five-set thriller to grab a valuable point for the visitors. The result: 5-7, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. However, the Italian lead would not last long – Raonic’s mature display allowed the Canadians to stay contenders for a semifinal ticket. Raonic struck 25 aces past Fabio Fognini, thus paving his way to a 6-4, 7-6 (4), 7-5. straight sets win.
